WEERIMULL MYSTERY TOUR
Thursday arvo saw Tim and I head off with a loaded ute and bike trailer, are we going for 3 nights or a month. ?
Leaving the green of Keith, we bounced our way into the dry of the Murray Sunset Park.
We were greeted by 100’s of roos, always a lead riders favourite sight, upon arrival at camp, we were met by Russel, relieved to see us, after a hour alone in the bush was a little concerned about his navigation.
We setup camp and lit a signal fire for others arriving. After dark, lights were seen in the distance, then not seen, then seen again only to disappear again. The noise then arrived across the salt flats, definitely Jarrod’s tugboat. The lights continued to appear then disappear, Jarrod and Greg arrived via a whooped out section of track. That would explain the noise and lights!!!
Thursday night was definitely a cold one, must remember more bedding for Friday night!
The plan for Friday was a short loop; cut wood then relax by the fire.
We launched straight in to some warmup whoops for morning tea, followed by some more whoops that got bigger and bigger, until Russel clipped a tree, damaging his bike requiring trackside repairs, and a scratch on his thigh from his handlebars. A lap around Rocket Lake had all smiling, with Greg certainly blowing the cobwebs out of his bike and himself. Great to see Greg out on the bike again, after a long time off. Sweet tracks back to camp.
Ben arrived via the same whooped out track as Jarrod and Greg, again looking relived to see us out in the middle of nowhere.
It was around lunch time a call was received from Anthony, who was concerned that the camp site he was at was deserted. A lot of confusion, until it was suggested he back track until he could tell us where he was, a long way from us it turned out. Directions were given and Anthony arrived safely.
A wood supply mission was implemented, with Jarrod keen to blow the cobwebs outta his chainsaw. Tim said give it here, “I’ll show you how its done”, smoke and noise echoed through the park , Jarrod’s chain was well and truly buggered !!!.
Just before dark a mob of goats appeared near camp, Tim demonstrated the mustering ability of a KTM 500; he then proceeded to give Jarrod a lesson in goat anatomy. Later that evening around a big roaring fire, Tim and I gave a more in depth rural lesson, regarding male castration, Jarrod was seen to be still shaken from his lesson re gonads.
Greg and Jarrod had quite a kitchen setup, with the amount of gas cartridges used over the 3 days, no doubt adding to global warming. I named them the “Cartridge Brothers”, whilst they made no attempt to cook on the open fire; they certainly kept me awake with regular explosive experimentation.
Saturday morning was again cool to say the least. As bikes, breakfast and riders were prepped, Justin arrived outta the park.
Eight riders set off Saturday morning, at the first break, Anthony asked if it was all going to be like that ??, possibly I said, turns out I was right, the whoops were big and soft. I made a change to the plan and took a little used track that turned out to be not so punishing for our warm sweating group. Upon completion of the track, Greg and I were waiting, when we heard the unmistakeable sound of the yellow Yamaha (or is it a Suzuki?), it stopped short of the track …silence. I walked into the bush 10 metres and sang out to Jarrod “you right?”, a very relieved face looked up, I realized something was up, he was glad to see me, cause where we had come from was a bike rescue nightmare. The mighty yellow Yamaha (or is it a Suzuki ?”) was done. Jarrod said it just went “wwwwiiiiizzzzzzzz”, “Kaboom”, smoke and flames shotout from the stricken yellow Yamaha (or is it a Suzuki ?”). Game Over for Jarrod. Editor “I swear that’s what happened “
A rescue mission was launched, with Jarrod on Greg’s KTM, following myself back to camp, to retrieve his Ute, and collect Greg and the stricken yellow Yamaha (or is it a Suzuki?”). The rest of the group continued on, arriving back at camp for a quick refuel and bite to eat, and to pick me up.
Ben witnessed a spectacular get off by Justin, something involving whoops and feet near ears!
Anthony was done for the day he said.
The afternoons track was nothing short of fantastic, with no problems, except for Justin passing the lead rider on a corner,…………… that’s never happened before !!!, he was retrieved and we continued.
That night around the camp fire, we all witnessed something we will all never forget… Ben devouring what was possibly the largest steak sandwich ever to grace the Murray Sunset Park. He quietly went about the task without fuss, a lot like his riding. Smooth and graceful!
The Cartridge Brothers entertained us with their explosive experimentation, whilst Jarrod proceeded to drown his sorrow about the yellow Yamaha (or is it a Suzuki?”).
Sunday morning’s short ride turned into a comedy of errors with bikes and riders getting separated a number of times, it was cut short with all packed up and on the road by lunch.
Thanks to all who made the long drive from Adelaide, Tim and I had a great time with lots of laughs and great riding.
Cheers,
Bill.
